Automatic classification of auroral images in substorm studies

چکیده
Millions of auroral images are captured every year by ground-based imagers. Even though the auroral appearance or “type” yields relevant information about the physical processes in the ionosphere and the magnetosphere, qualitative descriptions of auroras are typically used. Modern methods including those widely used in computer vision research can, however, make it possible to use objective and quantitative measures in analysing auroral appearance. We are currently developing techniques for automated auroral image analysis. In order to numerically compare auroral objects, we can either describe individual auroral shapes — such as arcs — or use statistical appearance models (texture). We demonstrate how one can use Fourier Descriptors to compare shapes extracted from auroral images. Also, using a recently developed texture analysis technique, we show how texture measurements can be used in classifying auroral type in a timeseries.

Investigation of external triggering of substorms with Polar ultraviolet imager observations
[1] The triggering mechanism(s) for the substorm expansion phase onset is one of the outstanding issues in magnetospheric physics. Previous studies have shown that an impingement of the high solar wind dynamic pressure may lead to the expansion phase onset of a substorm. These previous studies typically used a negative magnetic bay as the main proxy for a substorm, but we now know that some mag...
متن کاملAutomated determination of auroral breakup during the substorm expansion phase using allsky imager data
This paper describes a novel method for quantitatively and routinely identifying auroral breakup following substorm onset using the Time History of Events and Macroscale Interactions during Substorms all-sky imagers. Substorm onset is characterized by a brightening of the aurora that is followed by auroral poleward expansion and auroral breakup. This breakup can be identified by a sharp increas...
متن کاملGlobal auroral responses to abrupt solar wind changes: Dynamic pressure, substorm, and null events
[1] Global auroral images are used to investigate how specific types of solar wind change relate to the resulting type of auroral-region disturbance, with the goal of determining fundamental response types. For not strongly southward IMF conditions (Bz ^ 5 nT), we find that IMF changes that are expected to reduce the convection electric field after^30 min of negative IMF Bz cause typical substo...
متن کاملThe correlation of ULF waves and auroral intensity before, during and after substorm expansion phase onset
[1] We present case studies of the evolution of Ultra-Low Frequency (ULF) magnetic wave amplitudes and auroral intensity through the late growth phase and the expansion phase of the substorm cycle. We present strong evidence that substorm-related auroral enhancements are clearly and demonstrably linked to ULF wave amplitudes observed at the same location. In all three case studies presented, th...
متن کاملTemporal and spatial evolution of discrete auroral arcs as seen by Cluster
Two event studies are presented in this paper where intense convergent electric fields, with mapped intensities up to 1350 mV/m, are measured in the auroral upward current region by the Cluster spacecraft, at altitudes between 3 and 5 Earth radii. Both events are from May 2003, Southern Hemisphere, with equatorward crossings by the Cluster spacecraft of the pre-midnight auroral oval. Event 1 oc...
